Geo Metro Engine
At the onset, the Geo Metro was given a 1.0 liter engine with three cylinders.
It was good enough to get you from one point to another and a real gas saver.
This was what General Motors was banking on. A practical, economical and reliable
car for the everyday Joe and Jane, one that they could afford to buy and meet
the expense of its upkeep.

But in 1997, many were clamoring for more power for the Geo Metro, this was America
after all, the bigger the power the better. GM relented, the 1997 Geo Metro was
outfitted with a 1.3 liter engine and the cylinders were upgraded to 4 from the
previous 3. Some who wanted more got the racing version of the Geo Metro. They
sported 8 valve SOHC engines and the 1998 and later models were provided with
16 valve SOHC engines. Through all of this, the Metro still was known for its
famous gas mileages.
